What is Soy Protein?

Soy protein, often used as an alternative to meat-based protein, is rich in nutrients that are vital for bodily health and function. It is included in many food products, as well as nutritional supplements targeted toward enhancing physical performance. Depending on what form you consume it in, it also may contribute to preventing disease.

Pure Source Nutrition Soy protein isolate is a pure form of soy protein that is refined from soy flour through alkali extraction, extraction of fiber and drying. Almost completely less in carbohydrates and fats, it contains approximately 90 percent protein. It has a neutral flavor and, because of bacterial fermentation, is less likely to cause flatulence than other forms of soy protein. 

Significance

Soy protein isolate is used mainly in food products to facilitate moisture and fat absorption, emulsification, aeration and for increasing protein and amino acid content. Because it is rich in protein, soy protein isolate contributes to the building of muscle, and athletes use it to help increase lean muscle mass.

Function

Similar to whey protein isolate, soy protein isolate contains high levels of branched chain amino acids -- or BCAAs -- which are the first amino acids that are metabolized during exercise. Soy protein isolate also contains high levels of leucine, an essential amino acid that stimulates protein synthesis and improves muscle repair and growth. Because it contains almost no carbohydrates and fat, it slows down glucose absorption in the blood, lowers insulin levels and helps your body burn fat. Researchers at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences say soy protein isolate may also help protect against certain types of cancer, according to a study published in April 2005 in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Soy protein is not associated with fat or cholesterol, as is the case with many animal based proteins. Soy protein has one of the highest Lysine contents of all vegetable protein - this amino acid is important in maintaining lean muscle mass. It also has the highest content of Arginine of all commercially available proteins.

When and How to Use

For optimum results use 2-3 servings of Pure Source Nutrition Soy Protein daily. Ideally consume any time during the day as a meal or as post workout drink.

For 1 serving, add 1 level scoop to approximately 350 - 450ml ice cold water or skimmed milk or fruit juice and shake approximately for 1 minute.
